Antique Tables
Sultana
Technical Information: From page 20 of the 1912 Carom and Pocket Tables Catalogue of the Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company.

Also available in a combination table.

The Sultana is covered by design patent, which means that it is entirely original, in addition to which it is extremely attractive in appearance. It is furnished in both carom and with pockets and can, of course, be converted into a combination of both, either by means of pocket stops or our new convertible cushion rails. Design patent awarded May 7, 1912. Produced under various patents granted from 1892 to 1905.

Wood and Finish: Oak and mahogany. The oak is finished in fancy quarter-sawed, our No. 6 medium or golden color, with Boxwood inlay having a small, black border. The mahogany is finished in our regular No. 2 stock mahogany color and in what is known as an egg shell gloss, which means that after being given the ordinary cabinet finish, it is hand rubbed to a dull polish which can be more easily kept clean than any other finish.

Construction: Framework of body is 2 1/2" thick x 15" wide. Hardwood backing, built up in compound construction and double cross veneer facing on the outside. Ordinarily not made in sections, but can be built that way with mitred corners when specially ordered. Corners reinforced with leg cap 2 3/4" thick x 8" square. Long stretchers are 1 3/4" x 5 1/2". The side stretchers, of which there are two, are each 1 3/4" thick x 9". These are countersunk into reinforcing blocks 8"x9" and held in place by a heavy frame bolt, making a rigid bridge construction. Legs 8 1/2" square by 14 3/4" high, tongued and grooved compound construction, reinforced by corner cap in frame body with 18" bolt and four hardwood dowels. The wood construction all of first quality. Cabinet made and put together in a most thorough manner. All joints made close and secure and all mitres absolutely accurate. Joints made close and secure and all mirtres absolutely accurate. Joints tongued and grooved, strongly doweled and glued or screwed firmly together. All corners and edges made perfectly smooth and true.

Cushion Rails: Cabinet construction, 1 3/4" x 3 5/8". The hardwood core is reinforced with one thickness of veneer on each side, thereby giving it additional strength. The cap rail is veneered with rosewood.

Slate bed: Good quality Vermont slate, 3 pieces to the set. Doweled joints with no screw holes in playing surface. Wood reinforcing frame 7/8" thick. Hardwood trim for pocket openings.

Cushions: Standard Quick Acting Monarch, style no. 1888. Guaranteed the most rapid and perfect angle cushion on the market. Quality certified by trademark plate set in cap of cushion rail.

Pockets: No. 3 style, guaranteed against tarnishing or peeling. Black cover leathers reinforced at point of contact for extra durability. Best quality red trimming leather and green fringe. No. 20 green worsted pocket nets.
